Vijayawada: Gastroenterologist K Jaganmohan Rao emphasised the need to create awareness among the people about the effective vaccine used to cure the highly contagious viral disease Hepatitis B.
Speaking at a health seminar on Hepatitis B organised by the Vasavya Nursing Home here on Saturday, Dr Jagamohan Rao said that nearly 10 lakh people world over die due to the viral infection every year. But it can be prevented with the help of an effective vaccine. Fortunately in India, hepatitis vaccination has been included in the expanded programme of immunization since 2005. He said the virus is spread from one human to another and attacks the liver.
Hepatitis B is 200 times more infectious than HIV virus and can affect all age groups. It is a hardy virus and can live outside human body for a long time. It can easily spread through sexual contact, sharing of needles, razors, unsafe injections, blood transfusions and from mother to child during pregnancy. Sharing the same domestic environment with a chronically infected person without taking adequate precautions can cause the virus to spread.
The gastroenterologist advised the patients to get regular blood tests to detect the problem and medication would bring relief. Hepatitis could be cured in most cases with medication in a period of 12 to 24 weeks, he said. Dr G Samaram and Dr Maru Vandana also participated.
