Atmakur: A Class Xth Dalit student, Vinod Kumar, of Pragati private high school in the town, fell unconscious after his teacher Saikiran thrashed him with sticks during the study hours on Saturday for no fault of his. The student was hospitalised as the teacher did not stop beating even after he lost senses.

Enraged residents of a local Dalit Colony attacked the school and demanded that the teacher should be handed over to them. Saikiran is absconding. They also staged a demonstration.
School correspondent Raghava claimed that the student had smoked, hence, he was punished. But Kumar contended that he had only lit waste paper outside and how he could he smoke while sitting in the class, he asked? His parents accused the teacher of misbehaving with girls and said that no action was taken by the correspondent even after they lodged complaints. They alleged that Raghava was hand-in-glove with Saikiran.
Representatives of several student and people’s organisations condemned the incident.
