Chittoor: The government is very serious in tackling the menace caused by unscrupulous money lenders, said Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Chinna Rajappa.
Speaking to the media here on Thursday, he said the police have intensified vigil in areas where the call money business flourished and the number of persons arrested till date has crossed 240 and more such unscrupulous elements are under scrutiny by the police while the judicial probe has already begun.
Chinna Rajappa said that free hand has been given to police to nab the money lenders involved in call money scam that rocked the entire State.
He said the scandal is being investigated in coordination with the government departments and agencies concerned in view of its consequences to the economy and implications for law and order. After the call money–cum–sex racket came to light, a large number of victims started narrating their woes publicly and have cooperated with the police in exposing more wrongdoers, he added.
Chinna Rajappa said the police are looking into the veracity of complaints and instructions were given to the district SPs to set up a complaint cell in each district to register the complaints filed by the victims. He said the government was considering enacting a law to regulate money lending business in the present session itself.
The Home Minister said that the government had ordered a judicial inquiry into the issue and anyone with complaints could approach the judicial commission apart from approaching the police. “No one will be spared. This is our firm assurance and commitment to the people,” he added.
Referring to the gruesome murder of Chittoor Mayor couple, the Home Minister said with the main accused Chandrasekhar alias Chintu (nephew of Katari Mohan) in the double murder of Chittoor Mayor Katari Anuradha and her husband Katari Mohan on November 17, surrendering before the Chittoor town police on December 24, the police were able to unravel the mystery behind the murder.
He said the State government has decided to hike the daily remuneration of home guards from Rs 300 to Rs 400 and said it will go a long way to improve the living standards of the beneficiaries. He lauded the efforts of Chittoor SP G Srinivas in making Chittoor as crime-free city despite the workload for policemen increasing due to staff shortage. The Home Minister also made a scathing attack on YSRCP chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy for making baseless allegations against Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to derive political mileage.
