Vijayawada: The glass ceiling is still not broken. In spite of 49 women getting trained thoroughly in driving at Nunakapeta and almost 27 days have passed since the launch of the scheme, women drivers have not made any headway. With no women passengers patronising the She Autos, it is back to the men wielding the machine.
Though She Autos were launched on December 4 by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu lack of publicity, enough awareness programmes and planning has landed the scheme as a non-starter. Most people are unaware that She Auto services are available in Vijayawada say women drivers. When asked, some of the women passengers told The Hans India that they were not aware about the existence of the She autos.
She autos are in green colour so that people can easily distinguish between the normal auto and a She auto. But unfortunately due to lack of publicity, there were not many takers resulting in majority of the She Autos being operated by the male members of the family or close relatives of the women drivers. K Srinu a male auto driver who is operating the She Auto justified his act saying he had taken the auto on rent from his female relative for Rs 500 a day since she was not able to earn anything out of it.
There are more like him and the number is only increasing by the day.Responding over the issue, NFIW State general secretary P Durga Bhavani said that 49 women drivers who were trained thoroughly in driving at Nunakapeta are in a dilemma to attract the women passengers who were unaware of the She Auto operations in the city.
The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) which introduced ‘She Autos’ should focus on holding campaigns near Railway Station, Bus Stand and other major areas across the city to make the initiative in reach of all sections of the people, she opined.
Speaking to The Hans India, VMC Commissioner G Veerapandian said that as of now we have seized three ‘She Autos’ which were being operated illegally by the male drivers in the city. Awareness session was also conducted for the women drivers highlighting the importance of women safety transportation. Stringent action would be taken on the male auto drivers if they operated the vehicles illegally by paying rents to the women drivers, he said.
“We are exploring all possibilities in conducting awareness sessions for the women drivers and they should also exercise their duties with responsibility to make the initiative success, said Municipal Commissioner G Veerapandian.
