International red sanders smuggler held
Kaluvoya Police nabbed international Red Sanders smuggler, Khaleel Rehman alias Bhai and seized Rs1.35 crore worth of logs from his possession including 18 state-of-the-art woodcutters, three vehicles, 1,100 kilos of 75 red sanders logs at Gummidipundi of Tamilnadu on Tuesday.
Nellore/Kadapa: Kaluvoya Police nabbed international Red Sanders smuggler, Khaleel Rehman alias Bhai and seized Rs1.35 crore worth of logs from his possession including 18 state-of-the-art woodcutters, three vehicles, 1,100 kilos of 75 red sanders logs at Gummidipundi of Tamilnadu on Tuesday.
It may be recalled that Kaluvoya police seized a Skoda car and arrested seven red sanders smugglers on December 25 at Kaluvoya forest area in connection with the smuggling case. During the course of interrogation, the accused gave information, which led for Kaluvoya Police to launch a manhunt for international smuggler Khaleel Rehman alias Bhai, who exports Red sanders to China via Chennai.
Kaluvoy Sub Inspector Kondapa Naidu, Krishnapatnam SI Viswanatha Reddy, Tada SI Suresh Babu, and Podalakur Circle Inspector Sreenivas Rao participated in the operation. Atmakur DSP Subba Reddy said that international smugglers were using state-of-the-art wood cutters for cutting red sander logs in the forest area that make low noise giving jolt to beat officers of the forest department.
Khaleel Rehman used these wood cutters for axing red sanders in the forest area and exported them to China using connectivity from Chennai. Police said that the smugglers transport the logs to Chennai, which they use as a base camp before arranging consignment to other countries. Meanwhile, in Kadapa district 11 wood cutters were arrested near Idupulapaya forest area on Monday midnight.
According to the Vempalle FRO Reddaiah, the forest officials acting on atip off, reached the Bogadamma Cheruvu on Monday night around 1 am and found some posse of wood cutters chiseling the red sander logs. The forest officials seized 14 red sander logs weighing 243 kg worth Rs 7 lakh and arrested 11 wood cutters of Kadapa district. All of the maer below 25 years of age. Similarly, in Tirupati,anti-smuggling task force arrested 9 red sanders operatives in Mavella forest area of Seshachalam forests, 8 km from Tirumala on Tuesday. The force also recovered 10 red sander logs in the area. They also recovered 29 logs which were hidden under a culvert near Vadamalapeta, on Tirupati –Chennai highway. The logs were estimated to cost about Rs 15 lakh.
