Tanuku/Eluru: Sankranti, the festival that brings joy to farmers and business communities alike, failed to cheer the communities. Once celebrated on a large with fervor lasting three days (from Bhogi to Kanuma), the festival is fading out in rural areas and towns. Apart from the State government sponsored Sankranti Sambaralu, celebrations are largely subdued and business has been dull in the West Godavari region.

While the district headquarters, Eluru registered second dull season on the trot, the situation is more or less the same in Tanuku, Nidadavole, Kovvuru, Narsapuram and other towns. Tanuku lacked the festive spirit. With no disposable income among farmers, wo are the majority in the town, the business has been largely dull. Mohammad Azam, owner of Jeans Gallery said, “We have invested lot of money for new varieties of clothes in view of this Pongal season.

But, the sales are nowhere near expectations. Customers are hardly stepping in and stock hasn’t moved an inch. We have to pay the bonuses and salaries from our reserve cash.” Tailors, fruit merchants are also on the same boat. Babu Rao, a tailor in Tanuku town said, “We always look forward for this season and used to engage four to five workers. Now the workers have no work.” As far as the rural areas are concern, the festival mood hasn’t set in. The farmers are in distress due to losses in cultivation.

In Eluru, the business is going on a dull note. Though the sales have picked up from Tuesday in the city for the cloth merchants, it is nowhere near their expectations. “We are unable to pinpoint the reason for the dull sales,” said Krishna Mohan, a cloth merchant. Another cloth merchant Satyanarayana said “We announced offers like one plus one. But the response is average. Online business is also one of the reasons besides no cash reserves among farmers and workers.”

The situations more or less the same in other business “During this period, we used to have gala sales. But, when compared to last year, the business is dull,”said Y Srinivas, a furniture shop owner.
