Vijayawada/Kakinada/Eluru: In spite of orders from the High Court and Lok Ayukta banning cockfights, the blood sports of roosters have been organised on a large scale in coastal districts. Politicians, of ruling party in particular, appear to have influenced the administration to keep off from containing the fights.
Cock fights are conducted at several places in Krishna district including Kolleru region with people’s representatives personally launching them, according to reliable sources. Excise Minister Kollu Ravindra and ZP chairperson Gadde Anuradha are among the people who watched the fights organised in Machilipatnam.
Local MLA Kodali Venkateswara Rao was present in Gudivada, Eluru MP Maganti Venakateswara Rao in Kolleru and Mandali Budha Prasad in Nagayalanka. The fights reached their peak on Thursday in U-Kothapalli and in neighboring Pithapuram mandal of East Godavari district.
In Pithapuram mandal, TDP MLA SVSN Varma and his brother Ravi Varma extended active support to the event. Though Kakinada SDPO S Venkateswara Rao two days ago said that the police would strictly enforce the court order, the authorities failed to act.
In West Godavari, about 400 rings were set up on the Bhogi day. Activities like dice game (gundata) and cards were organised. Liquor was sold at the venues. TDP MLAs Ch Prabhakar (Denduluru), G Veeranjaneyulu (Unguturu), V Sivaramaraju (Undi) took part in cockfights.
In Kovvuru division 284 rings were arranged to conduct the fights. In Kovvuru, Municipal chairman Surapaneni Chinna was present. Telugu Rytu State organising secretary J Chowdary was present at Malakapalli and at Kovvuru. In Gopalapuram MLA M Venkatswara Rao in Buttayagudem, MLA M Srinivas Rao were present.
