Nellore: Scientists from National Institute of Oceanography have started demarcation of CRZ areas in coastal areas of the district for taking up the works for proposed tourism projects. It may be recalled that the State government had proposed many projects and still they have not taken off, despite Centre allocating funds for the same recently.

The AP Tourism Development Corporation has deployed an expert organisation, National Institute of Oceanography, for demarking the areas that fall under various categories of Coastal Regulatory Zone, according to guidelines of the Union Ministry of Environment of Forests.

In fact, any organisation either government or private, should not violate the mandatory guidelines of CRZ as per provisions under Section 3(2) (v) of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The Central government had declared that the coastal stretches like seas, bays, estuaries, creeks, rivers and backwaters which are influenced by tidal action up to 500 metres from the High Tide Line (HTL) and the land between the Low Tide Line (LTL) and the HTL as Coastal Regulation Zone.

Restrictions were imposed with immediate effect from Feb 1991 on setting up and expansion of industries, operations etc. in the areas fall under CRZ. Now, scientists from regional centre of the NIO, Visakhapatnam-N P C Reddy, Ch Jawahar Kumar, and Y S N Raju-have started demarcation of CRZ areas at various locations.

According to scientists, they have completed the process in Mypadu, and Iskapalli beaches and work is in progress in Irukkam Island in Tada mandal, BV Palem, Venadu, and other areas that fall under Pulicat lake for taking up works of island resorts and beach parks.

The district boasts of popular beaches like Kothakoduru, Iskapalli, Krishnapatnam, Tummalapenta, Mypadu, Tupilipalem, and Ramatheertham that are viable for boating and water sports at reservoirs and important barrages. Recently, the department of tourism sought the response of land owners at the coast in various mandals for developing beach resorts at Kothakoduru, Iskapalli, Krishnapatnam, Tummalapenta, Mypadu, Tupilipalem, and Ramatheertham beaches.

It also proposed boating and water sports at important reservoirs like Kandaleru and Somasila, Swarnamukhi barrage and Pulicat Lake. Irukkam can be reached from Bheemunivaripalem on the national highway where a passenger ferry is available and the 14-km boat ride will be quite exciting for tourists.

After the survey is completed, APTDC would be able to demarcate the boundaries and prepare Environment Impact Assessment report for submitting proposals to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests for clearances with the help of these demarcations. Since the NIO is a CSIR controlled organisation the certifications would be valid for approvals from the government of India.
