Chirala: The police arrested Chirala MLA Amanchi Krishna Mohan and few others on Thursday evening at Chirala on the charges of obstructing peace in society.

It may be recalled here that Amanchi was supporting the family of Boppana Purnachandra Rao, who died in police custody on Wednesday, at Karemchedu police station. Purnachandra Rao was arrested by the Vetapalem police on Tuesday on charge of committing theft. He was shifted to Karemchedu police station for investigation.

The police informed the family of Purnachandra Rao that he developed fits and succumbed to illness at the Chirala Area Hospital. The family members of Purnachandra Rao alleged that the police had killed him and staged a protest on Wednesday. Amanchi Krishna Mohan also joined the protestors and demanded justice to the bereaved family and action against the police personnel involved in the alleged lock-up death.

Guntur IG Sanjay appointed Kavali DSP S Raghava Rao as the investigation officer in the case. The police shifted the body to RIMS at Ongole for postmortem on Thursday. Chirala MLA demanded the police authorities to change the investigating officer and announce ex gratia to the family of deceased.

As police sensed that the MLA and the family of Purnachandra Rao are planning to stage protests with the dead body, they arrested over 200 persons from Chirala and surrounding places, before the body reached Vetapalem.

The police arrested Amanchi Krishna Mohan at Naguluppalapadu, while he was on the way to Chirala, on charges that he is provoking others to disrupt peace. He was taken to Chirala I Town police station in his own car by the police. On the other hand, the police forced the family members of Purnachandra Rao to complete the last rites of Purnachandra Rao immediately at Vetapalem, without giving chance for any protests.
