Vijayawada: In a bid to resolve drinking water problem in the city during summer, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has prepared a comprehensive summer water plan with an estimated cost of Rs 2.34 crore, which will be spent on buying of equipment and taking up of repairs to the pipelines on a war footing.

Speaking to ‘The Hans India’ on Sunday, VMC chief engineer MA Shukoor said that every summer, residents of Patamata, Autonagar, Gurunanak Colony, Mogalrajpuram and Gunadala are forced to grapple with erratic water supply. The VMC has already instructed the engineering department officials to speed the repair works at these places to augment the drinking water supply. Every day 160 MLD drinking water was being supplied to the 12 lakh population in the city. As part of the water plan, officials have also laid emphasis on repairing defunct bore wells at various parts of the city. Tenders have already been called for, and works will be completed in a fortnight, he claimed.

The VMC chief engineer also said that besides the regular water supply to all the areas, special supply through tankers would also be taken up. He said orders were issued to all the officials communicating to them that repairs to the bores would be taken up with immediate effect. Referring to the supply of drinking water to hilly areas, he said the pressure would be increased to ensure supply to all the dwellings on hill slopes.

About 56 bores were supplying water across the city. Additional 60 new bores would be installed out of which six bores at West, 46 at Central and 10 at East constituencies. Officials have also submitted proposals of utilizing the 18 tankers primarily to supply water across the city. More number of tankers will be also engaged to cater to the needs of colonies located on canal bunds and on the outskirts such as Autonagar and Patamata, said VMC chief engineer MA Shukoor.
