Nellore: Inspired by the success of soaps manufactured by Kadapa Central jail inmates, prisoners in Nellore Central Jail are making Sudhar shampoo which would be sold in the open market eventually. These are part of efforts by the prison authorities to help inmates earn income while serving their sentence in jail.

  • Nellore Central Jail authorities are encouraging prisoners to take up various activities like shampoo making, cultivating vegetables and fruits, besides setting up dairy units among others
  • These products will soon hit the open market, officials say

The AP Prisons Department had recently launched toilet soap with the same name ‘Sudhar’ at Visakhapatnam. Initially, the product will be rolled out in prisons across the State before putting it for sale in open market. Nellore central jail has around 70 acres of land. While 25 acres of land is sufficient for accommodation of inmates, they started cultivating vegetables, fruits among others in the remaining land.

Now, inmates have started a canteen inside the jail, and have been selling eatables inside the premises. They also took up dairying, rearing sheep. They are also planning to market coconut oil, toothpaste, and shoes apart from Shampoo.
Officials also planned a fuel station in the outskirts of Nellore similar to prisons in Kadapa and Rajahmundry. The Department of Prisons has approved the station for Nellore Jail. The district administration has also allocated around three acres of land at Venkatachalam for setting up the same.

They are also planning for making Hawaii Cheppals and sanitary napkins for at affordable cost. Excess quantity of products would be put for sale in open markets at Rythu Bazaars where agriculture marketing departments allocated stalls for the prison department.

A senior official from the central jail said: “We are planning to vend the Sudhar shampoos initially for the inmates and sell to other jails across the state in the future. We have arranged one dairy unit in the premises with ten animals and also planning for another ten milching animals for meeting the daily requirement of 125-130 litres per day.”Further, officials grounded one sheep unit with 25 animals in the premises to take care of providing mutton to jail. This would relieve authorities from the burden of purchasing mutton from outside.
