Anantapur: Minister Paritala Sunitha on Friday advised students to join politics if they are genuinely interested in helping the poor and to do good work, but not to do so only in case they want to earn money.

Speaking as the chief guest at the anniversary celebrations of local Arts College, she called upon students to shun politics on campuses and to maintain calm without getting provoked, ‘as education is more important than politics’.

Sunitha observed that parents were sending their children to colleges with high hopes. ‘This should not be forgotten,’she added. She assured the gathering that her doors were always open if they faced any problems.

The Minister wished that more women should join the IAS and IPS, while recalling that many prominent persons were students of Arts College and were occupying high posts, bringing a good name to the institution. This should be kept in view by the college students and they should study well to make their parent happy, she stated.

Sunitha said the Paritala Ravi Trust had set up RO drinking water plants in the boys and girls hostels. In another 15 days, she would extend a personal assistance of Rs 3 lakh for putting up a fence to the college. In response to a request for an indoor stadium in the college, she promised the college management to prevail upon Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to sanction it. Naidu would be invited to the centenary celebrations of the college in July this year.

Addressing the gathering, B Pullaiah, MLC, advised the college students to perform well utilising abundant opportunities and go abroad for higher studies. He observed that with determination they could achieve any objective. Pullaiah assured the gathering that if during the budget session funds were allocated he would donate Rs 10 lakh to the college.

College principal Dr N Rangaswamy spoke on the achievement of the institution. He thanked the people's representatives, officials and former students for extending financial assistance to the college.
