Several intellectuals, university professors and environmentalists appealed to the people to conserve water for future generations, while speaking at the World Water Day workshop organised at the YVS Murthy Auditorium in Andhra University here on Tuesday.
Visakhapatnam: Several intellectuals, university professors and environmentalists appealed to the people to conserve water for future generations, while speaking at the World Water Day workshop organised at the YVS Murthy Auditorium in Andhra University here on Tuesday.
The programme was jointly conducted by Andhra Pradesh Pollution Board, Samaikhya and Green Environment Society. State Expert Appraisal Committee chairman Dr VSRK Prasad, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said due to change in the climate the water levels on the earth have been coming down.
Similarly, pollution levels were increasing due to the massive industrialisation being taken up in the name of globalisation, he pointed out.
He also said that the water was being contaminated due to excessive use of pesticides and other chemicals in farming. Principal of Andhra University Engineering College Prof Ch V Ramachandra Murthy said that United Nations has announced the World Water Day in 1993 and since 1994 the Day is being observed across the world on March 22.
He reminded that water is the greatest gift of nature given to the mankind and it is the duty of human beings to protect the resources for future generations.
Green Environment Society representative JV Ratnam said the society members organised awareness programmes in the rural areas for a week and the response has been encouraging. He said there is a need to create awareness among the people on the rational use of water. Zonal officer of Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board K Srirama Murthy, senior officials of the board and a large number of students participated in the workshop.
Meanwhile, the World Water Day was observed in Public Sector Undertakings, including Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and Gangavaram Port, here on Tuesday.Forming a human chain at Technical Training Institute and at the Central Stores Junction displaying water conservation messages marked the occasion at the Steel Plant.
Technical presentations on ‘Water Management in Vizag Steel Plant’ and ‘Recycling of waste water’ were made which was attended by senior officers, employees, union leaders and Steel Executives’ Association representatives.
Executive Director (Works) I/c K V Ramana Rao, ED (Operations) P.K.Rath and General Manager (Water Management Department) V Ramanujam addressed the brief meeting. Leaflets containing tips for water conservation inside the plant and at Ukkunagaram were distributed to create awareness. The programme was organised by Water Management Department.
The multi-purpose Gangavaram Port also conducted awareness programme on the World Water Day on Tuesday on sustainable water harvesting techniques and responsible usage of water which is precious natural resource.
