Nellore: Nellore and other parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh are going to have dedicated beach-cum-coastal highway as part of the Sagarmala Project, which is aimed at promoting port-led direct and indirect development and also to provide infrastructure to transport goods.

The Union government had considered Krishnapatnam port, which would be useful for movement of raw materials and finished goods, while approving Sagarmala Project from Krishnapatnam to Naidupet along the Buckingham Canal. The Sagarmala Project, in fact, is intended to achieve the key objectives like port-led economic development, optimising the use of existing and future transport assets and developing new linkages for transport to be served by ports in EXIM and domestic trade, hassle-free and seamless cargo movement.

Subsequently, the State government has decided to convert the entire coast-line highway into four-lane. The proposed highway will connect the existing national highway between Kathipudi in East Godavari district and Ongole in Prakasam district. As a result, coastal areas will have beach-cum-coastal highway from Srikakulam to Nellore on south coast, which will be a parallel highway to the existing national highway of Chennai-Kolkata.

The proposed highway will be taken up in phased manner under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis in a stretch of 970 km. District collectors have also started land acquisition process and special officials were also deputed for the task. As part of the project, the highway will link the ports like Bhavanapadu, Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Kakinada, Machilipatnam, Vodarevu, Krishnapatnam and the newly proposed port at Dugarajapatnam.

It is estimated to cost around Rs.14-15 crore per kilometer, and nearly Rs.2, 100-2,250 crore for taking up first phase work for about 150 km.It may be recalled that the government is also developing four industrial corridors such as Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC), Bengaluru-Mumbai Economic Corridor (BMEC), Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) and Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC). CBIC and VCIC cover the state of AP.
