Hyderabad: The opposition YSRCP staged a walkout from Assembly here on Tuesday, in protest against the government’s inaction and mishandling of drought in the State that hit the farmers hard.

Speaking on the issues of drought, YS Jaganmohan Reddy charged the government of delay in announcing the drought mandals, which resulted in receiving only a meagre financial assistance from the Centre. “The government had to submit its drought report around October 5, 2015. However, it had declared only 196 mandals as drought hit in the first phase on October 21 and again another 163 mandals on November 21 during the same year,” he said.

“The relief sought from the Centre on account of drought was Rs 2,340 crore. But, the State got only Rs 430 crore for the first list of drought hit mandals and another Rs 280 core for the second list of drought hit mandals. By the time the Central team visited the State to assess drought, the State was ravaged by cyclones and floods. How could it be possible for the Centre to assess and provide the quantum of relief sought by the State,” Jagan questioned.

Terming the financial relief provided by the Centre would be of no help even to meet one-third of the drought hit mandals, Jagan accused the government with gross negligence and mishandling the prevailing severe drought situation in the State.

Brushing aside the government’s claim that several of its efforts have yielded good results in recharging the groundwater resources, Jaganmohan Reddy said, “It was due to the cyclone witnessed in the State during November last year that the situation of groundwater resources had improved. But, the government has been falsely claiming that it was all happening because of its efforts. Further, if the situation of water has been so much improved, then, why was that people have to walk for miles to fetch drinking water,” he pointed out.

The opposition leader pointed out that people in several districts including Vizianagaram, Prakasam and East Godavari have been facing acute drinking water problem, as these districts have been reeling under severe drought conditions.

Finding fault in the government’s claim of providing livelihood under employment guarantee scheme, the YSRCP chief said that people had to go to 100 Km or so, to fetch a job that gives them Rs 100 per day income under the scheme, yet, the administration has been sleeping over, without taking effective drought mitigation measures.
