Vijayawada: Governor ESL Narasimhan, who is also the Chancellor of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), expressed dissatisfaction over the current practices in the medical system. Addressing the gathering of graduating students, medicos, professors, practicing doctors and the management of the University at the 18th and 19th convocation ceremony of the University held here on Wednesday, he said: “It is high time that we incorporate ethics, compassion and responsibility in our profession towards patients. Let Andhra Pradesh be the first State in the country to come out with reforms in medical industry,” he said.

He observed that the bulk of middle class people were feeling medical aid as a major burden due to the clinical measures that doctors were prescribing without identifying the problem by symptoms. ‘’It is a disgrace that doctors today do not even touch the patient before they start treating him. Everybody wants money, and money making is an important aspect too, but there has to be a limit. People are in bewilderment if they are being treated for their ailments or for money,” he said.

Narasimhan called out to the young brigade of doctors to take an oath and commit themselves to offer services ethically. He pointed that the youngsters should bring about a change in the system. “Why not the change come from Andhra Pradesh? Why not the administrations come out to display their fee structure for respective ailments for the public to bring parity in treatment costs? I have been insisting on this issue for over six months and nobody has really practiced it. If none are ready to maintain a code of ethics in medical profession, what is the use of taking oaths now,” he added.

He further said that if there was compassionate treatment at an affordable price, public would make a beeline to such hospitals, which bring profits along. He also asked the medicos to render their services in rural areas of the State, where the medical aids are much needed. ‘’Rural areas are deprived of proper facilities and are out of reach for health facilities.

A doctor should ensure that he can render his services in one such place for a period of at least a year.’’Later, the students from various affiliated colleges under the university were given away gold, silver and cash rewards for their meritorious performances in various disciplines. A total of 97 gold medals, 46 silver medals and 42 cash prizes were given away on the occasion.

As many as 13 students received their Ph Ds, 12 candidates received super specialty and 32 degrees in MD, MS and PG Diploma courses were given away. Close to 6000 candidates were awarded MBBS degree on the occasion.
