VPT to spend 2,200 cr for modernisation
The Visakhpatnam Port Trust has decided to spend Rs 2,200 crore for its modernisation programme with an ambitious plan to make it most preferred port in South Asian region.
Visakhapatnam: The Visakhpatnam Port Trust has decided to spend Rs 2,200 crore for its modernisation programme with an ambitious plan to make it most preferred port in South Asian region.
Chairman M T Krishnababu on Wednesday said the handling capacity of the port would be increased to 125 million tonnes after the modernisation. Presiding over the board meeting, he said that the port also received proposals to construct the cruise terminal at Bhimili at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore.
Considerable investments from the internal resources and through private sector participation were being made, he added.
The modernisation includes strengthening and mechanisation of the general-cum-bulk cargo berth (GCB) in the outer harbour to accommodate Rs 2 lakh DWT coal vessels (DBFOT).
Mechanised handling facilities for fertiliser at EQ7 berth(DBFOT) at a targeted output of 28,000TPD with storage sheds, silos and bagging plant.
Development of EQ1 and EQ1A berths in the inner harbour with mechanised handling facilities (DBFOT) at a targeted output of 15,000TPD and 27,000TPD for Handymax and Panamax vessels respectively for steam coal and thermal coal are also under proposals, he added.
