Vijayawada: The decades-old demand for Benz Circle flyover seems to be caught in confusion. While MP Kesineni Srinivas demands extension of flyover to ease traffic congestion in the city, the National Highway Authority officials argue that the stretch of national highway passing through Benz Circle is a state highway.

  • MP demands extension of flyover from Jyoti convention centre to Stella College
  • NHAI authorities claim it as state highway

The Benz Circle flyover is likely to be delayed if there was no consensus between state and Central governments over the national highway limits in the city. MP Kesineni appeals for extension of Benz Circle flyover from Jyothi Convention Centre to Stella College junction to ease traffic congestion at Benz Circle and submitted representations to Union Ministers.

The MP inspected the Benz Circle and Ring Road flyover site along with the National Highway Authority officials, including NHAI regional officer Anil Dixit and project director Suresh, on Saturday and appealed them to increase the flyover from present 618 metres to another 820 ft and build 1.4 km length flyover.

Speaking on the occasion, the MP said that by extending the flyover, the project cost would be increased by Rs 120 crore. He said that Benz Circle flyover was designed in the past keeping in view the Gundugolanu bypass road. He said that the flyover should be extended to Maris Stella College keeping in view the city traffic.

He said that he appealed Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for extension of flyover up to Ramesh Hospital junction. He said additional funds would be mobilised for the flyover with the cooperation of Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

However, responding to the representation of MP Kesineni Srinivas in the past, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways P Radhakrishnan said that in the project of six laning of Vijayawada –Gundugolanu section of National Highway -5, the NHAI is going to construct a bypass to Vijayawada city due to which the truck traffic will be shifted to bypass and congestion on the stretch from Benz Circle to Ramesh Hospital will be reduced.

As such extension of Benz Circle flyover up to Ramesh Hospital junction is not required at this juncture. Meanwhile, corporator Ch Gandhi said that the flyover should be constructed as per the convenience of local people. He said that if the flyover was not constructed as per the demand of local people, they oppose the construction of flyover. He expressed fears that if the flyover starts from Jyothi Convention Centre, it would block the traffic flow from Patamatalanka.
