Hyderabad: The controversy pertaining to modernisation works on Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme does not seem to subside. While the Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao released a letter written by the Kurnool RDO to his counterpart in Raichur and claimed that the AP government had in writing asked Karnataka to stop the works, the Andhra Pradesh Irrigation Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao felt that it was not proper for the Telangana government to rake up a political controversy over the issue.

  • Irrigation officials claim that the Kurnool RDO had only asked the Karnataka government not to take up works till they discuss the issue with Telangana

The Andhra Pradesh government is of the opinion that all such controversial issues should first be discussed between the officers of the two States and if they fail to resolve the issue only then the matter should be taken up at the Ministers’ level.

When asked about the letter written by the Kurnool RDO to Karnataka government, the irrigation officials told The Hans India that the RDO had only asked his counterpart to stop the works as there was a possibility of agitations by farmers leading to a law and order problem.

They said that the Kurnool RDO had only asked the Karnataka government not to take up works till they discuss the issue with Telangana. They said AP per se was not opposed to irrigation projects. All they want was that it should be done in consultation with the lower riparian State, they added.

They said any tussle between the two Telugu States would turn into an advantage to the upper riparian States of Karnataka and Maharashtra. They said, “The monsoon is ahead with a favourable projection of good rainfall. Heavy rains have been witnessed for the last one week in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This is not the time to rake up such issues.”
