Kurnool: Motivate farmers to dig farm ponds in their agricultural fields under ‘Panta Sanjeevani’ scheme as a measure to counter drought at a time when the groundwater levels were dwindling at an alarming pace, said District Collector Ch Vijay Mohan. The Collector participated in the orientation programme on Panta Sanjeevani and water resources management programme at VJR Function Hall here on Saturday.

Addressing the officials, he said the people should be enlightened on the need to dig a soak pit in every household. He said the Kurnool district administration’s focused drive in promoting farm ponds coupled with more than average rainfall received this season has helped in improving the water table at several pockets. “In fact, our area received inadequate rainfall compared to nearby places.

Nevertheless, the water collected in farm ponds has improved the groundwater level apart from acting as a drinking water source for cattle,” he added. He said the digging of farm ponds, soak pits and borewells will continue up to July 15 and added that CC roads will be laid in all villages.

He said in the wake of the water levels in Srisailam reservoir and Tungabhadra dam reaching dead storage level, the only solution in sight for tackling water scarcity is digging of farm ponds, soak pits and borewells. DWMA Project Director Pulla Reddy also spoke on the occasion.
