Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is planning to the installation of solar power plants at 22 areas-Head water works, VMC schools, VMC circle offices, parks and water reservoirs- in the city. A study has been already conducted for installation of solar plants to save power bills. The corporation is spending Rs 1,50,000 every month on power bills.

Now, the corporation is trying to reduce the power bills by an installation of solar power system. The civic body has installed 200 KW solar system with Rs 5 crore and it was inaugurated on Sunday. Now, the civic body can save Rs 50,000 a month with the installation of the solar plant in the VMC main office.

Hyderabad-based solar company PPS Enviro Power Private Limited installed the power generator, panels, and equipment and it will maintain it for 15 years under the Built Own Operate and Transfer system. Later, the solar project will be handed over to the VMC, which can use it another 10 years for power generation.

The Central government has declared Vijayawada as Solar City and rendering assistance for installation of solar projects in the city. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has installed the first solar energy plant with the capacity of 200 KW at the VMC office. The VMC will pay Rs 6.90 per unit to PPS Enviro Power Private Limited for using the power generated by it. The unit price is fixed for 15 years.

The company has spent Rs 5 crore for installation of the generator, solar panels and other equipment. If the extra power is generated it will go directly to the grid. If the solar system at the VMC office produces less power than the required by the VMC office, it will get from the grid. The VMC will get uninterrupted power supply either by a solar system or the traditional power used by the civic body.

Municipal Commissioner G Veerapandian told reporters on Sunday the VMC conducted study to install solar plants at 22 areas and efforts were on to transform Vijayawada into a Solar City.
