Visakhapatnam: Laws need to be changed if necessary for better and effective running of legislative bodies, said AP Legislative Council Chairman A Chakrapani here on Monday.

Chakrapani is a member of the Ethics Committee of AP Legislative Council that met for the first time here and discussed on “Behaviour of elected representatives in the legislative bodies and moral values.’’

Speaking on the occasion, Chakrapani said the entire democratic world has been deliberating on the members’ behaviour in the legislative bodies and it was found that the elected members instead of discussing people’s problems, they were raising issues that are useful to individuals and their political parties. Many problems are arising out of this and this might be a threat to the very existence of democracy in the world.

In order to overcome this issues, the elected members burying their party affiliations, should speak on the peoples’ issues which could improve the quality of people’s lives.

“If the elected members do not change their behaviour, the laws guiding their behaviour need to be amended in the interest of the people,’’ Chakrapani opined.

Chairperson of the committee and former minister Pratibha Bharathi said it was unfortunate that the members have been ignoring ethics. She suggested that all the members should think about people’s welfare instead of their individual and party benefits.

MLC MVVS Murthi said the success of the democracy depended on the elected members whose ultimate goal should be development for all. In-charge Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University Prof EA Narayana said awareness should be created among the members of Assembly and Council before beginning of the sessions.

Registrar of Damodara Sanjeevaiah National Law University K Dayananda Murthy said elected members talk about moral values and ethics but they themselves ignore them.
