Vizianagaram: Prominent writer and actor Gollapudi Maruthirao on Monday criticised AP government for not putting efforts to set up a memorial building for social reformer Gurajada Apparao in Vizianagaram. He visited Gurajada’s house along with academician and writer Yarlagadda Laxmi Prasad and interacted with media.
He said it was sad to know that the Municipal Council had rejected the proposal to allow some land to construct a memorial building for the great poet. “Instead of protecting our traditions, culture, and literature, we are running and erasing all the memories of our great leaders and writers. Gurajada is not only a writer but a social reformer who fought against social evils like child marriages and Kanyasulkam.
We should carry forward the great principles of that writer to our next generations,” he said. Maruthirao said, “We should join hands to save our heritage and culture. On behalf of literary lovers, we are demanding that the municipal authorities take necessary action on this issue.”
Later, they visited the house in which Gurajada lived and garlanded to his photo and paid tributes. They also met District Collector M M Nayak and submitted a memorandum to take necessary steps to save the wealth of literature and the memories of Gurajada.
