Pithapuram: A resident of Jaggayya Cheruvu Colony, Chittoori Sivamma (30) was found dead on Monday under suspicious circumstances. While her husband Anjayya claimed that she had committed suicide by setting self on fire, her younger brother Kumaraswamy accused Anjayya of resorting to harassment leading to the death.

Victim’s brother alleges dowry harassment

He attributed the death to alleged dowry harassment, after lodging a police complaint. The complaint stated that Anjayya had been harassing her for dowry since their marriage in 2010. He allegedly beat Sivamma four days back demanding Rs 50,000 to be brought from her parents in Girijam village. The couple, who had a love marriage in 2010, have a son. They stay in a rented house in the colony.

While Sivamma succumbed to severe burn injuries at Kakinada government hospital, Anjjayya too suffered burn injuries while trying to douse the flames. Kumaraswamy clarified that the death had nothing to do with the row over demolition in the colony, as the family did not have a house site. He described it as false propaganda by some persons that Sivamma had committed suicide because of eviction by the Revenue staff.
