Kakinada: MLA Akula Satyanarayana and MLC Somu Veerraju have emerged as the front -runners for the post of president of State unit of the BJP. The BJP, which is trying to strengthen its base in Andhra Pradesh, feels that it would be better to have a Kapu leader as the next president.

It may be mentioned here that the Kapus hold the sway in West and East Godavari districts and they can tilt the electoral balance. Even if the caste equations across the State are taken, the party leadership feels that Kapu leader would be able to strengthen the party by 2019.

This issue is said to have figured prominently at the State executive meeting held in West Godavari on Friday. BJP leaders from Centre including the national president Amit Shah, who have visited the State recently are also said to be of the opinion that a Kapu leader as successor to the present State president K Haribabu would be better.

When contacted on phone Akula Satyanarayana told The Hans India that that he being a disciplined soldier of the party, he would abide by the decision of the central leadership. He said he was ready to take up any responsibility the party bestows on him.

“If the party thinks I am fit for the post, I would do my best to live up to the expectations,” he said. However, another section of the party feels that there was every possibility of K Haribabu getting a second term since he was being supported by the Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu.
