The main functional objective of above system is to ensure safe navigation of all vessels while navigating inside, outside channels, anchorage area, port limits and berthing area thereby helping the port authorities for effective planning, scheduling and other business activities on par with international standards.

​Visakhapatnam: As part of modernisation of Indian major ports, Visakhapatnam Port has installed Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) at Port Signal Station-I, near Fishing Harbour on Tuesday.

Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust MT Krishana Babu inaugurated the new system in the presence of PL Haranth, Deputy Chairman, along with heads of departments and other senior officers.

The main functional objective of above system is to ensure safe navigation of all vessels while navigating inside, outside channels, anchorage area, port limits and berthing area thereby helping the port authorities for effective planning, scheduling and other business activities on par with international standards.

On acquisition of above system, safety of playing vessels increases through close surveillance with the help of integrated , radar, VHF and CCTV systems besides complying ISPS requirement.

The port officials can closely monitor the vessels within 20 nautical miles of port harbour. The key feature of new system is interfacing of vessel data which includes ship arrivals and departures into port operations shipping system, hence, vessel related information is updated automatically on a real time basis without manual intervention.

The system was installed by Elcome Integrated Systems Private limited, Mumbai with Rs 1.75 crore. The system is made operational round-the-clock with trained VTMS operators for port operations.
