Ongole: The Principal of Police Training College, Ongole, D Chand Naik, announced that the victims of road accidents in the country were more than victims of terrorist attacks in a year across the globe.
He attended the inaugural programme of ‘Accident-free week’ by the APSRTC in Ongole on Friday as the chief guest. D Chand Naik, SP and principal of the PTC said: “About 1.4 lakh people are dying in the country every year due to road accidents. When compared with the number of victims of terrorism in the country, for every one person killed in terrorist attacks, about 1,700 people are dying in road accidents every year.
Among those killed in the road accidents, more than 40 per cent of them are two wheelers, but 25 per cent of them might have lived if they wear a helmet during the accident.”
He further stated: “The RTC drivers, who are responsible for the lives of 50 to 60 passengers, should have tension-free mind, healthy body to perform their duty peacefully. The age and extra duties are affecting the ability of drivers to judge the road and fellow commuters. This is the reason for involvement of RTC drivers in the accidents.
But there is considerable decrease in the number of accidents when compared to last year. There are 10 accidents and 12 deaths in the Prakasam region in 2015, but the number of accidents has reduced to five and the deaths to eight.” Regional manager Adam Saheb said: It is the responsibility of the drivers to see that the passengers reach their destination safely.
So, we are taking the drivers after several rounds of tests in practical testing and offering training in the zonal training college before joining duties.
But even there are accidents. As part of the accident free week, we are sensitising the drivers about safe driving, importance of vehicle maintenance and offering counselling to the driver and his family members if necessary to address issues bothering his mind.”
