No honking near hospitals, beach road

Visakhapatnam: The city traffic police have brought in changes in the speed limits of vehicles in certain roads and imposed no honking zone near hospitals and beach road. The decision was taken after getting feedback from the vehicle users recently.

The speed limit on NH-16 stretch from Salapuvanipalem to Kurmannapalem is around 70 kmph and police increased it to 80 kmph. Similarly, the 60 kmph limit on NH-16 stretch between Kurmannapalem and Kommadi has been increased to 70 kmph, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K Prabhakar.

Speaking to the media here on Monday, he said that they are also contemplating to declare few more areas in Vizag as no horn zones following the complaints from students, patients in various hospitals and also tourists on the high decibel sounds round the clock.

Blowing horn has been banned on the beach road from Naval Coast Battery to Park Hotel. Very soon, hospital zones, Zilla Parishad Road and KGH Road would also be added to the list, he said.

The ACP said that the traffic police wing is now planning to ban the entry of autorickshaws on certain roads to ease the congestion as autorickshaws have been blocking the roads by erratic parking. However, the opinion of autorickshaw workers associations would be sought before imposing the ban.

As per Andhra University survey, more than 40,000 trucks and heavy vehicles pass through the city every day. Traffic wing has restricted the movement of trucks between 8 am and 10 pm. However, industrial areas Gajuwaka, Sheela Nagar and Mindi are exempted from this restriction.
