Chittoor: SP G Srinivas received the coveted Indian Police Medal from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the 70th Independence Day celebrations in Anantapur on Monday.

The SP, currently in the special grade DIG rank, is instrumental in undertaking a number of inter-State raids, including on the Indo-Bhutanese border, resulting in nabbing of half a dozen Chinese nationals involved in red sanders smuggling, in addition to arresting over 50 notorious international and inter-state smugglers.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Tuesday, the SP said that the novel initiative of Community Police Officers (CPOs) launched in January had started giving satisfactory results. There was a drastic fall in the crime rate in rural and urban areas, he added.

The SP said through 4,500 CPOs, they are trying to establish a people-friendly police administration. He said it was the duty of people to protect red sanders trees.He said, With the coordinated efforts of all departments involved, we can achieve zero smuggling and fully protect the Seshachalam forests.He was full of praise for the forces involved in combing operations, police and forest officials for their continuous efforts in fighting the red sanders smugglers.
