Vijayawada: The city police arrested 35 inter-State thieves and seized Rs 5.25 lakh worth 164 grams of gold ornaments, Rs 7,000 and two cell phones here on Wednesday. Out of the 35 arrested, 30 are women. Among the arrested, six women are from Chennai, 10 from Odisha and 19 from West Bengal. The city police identified that one gang from Tamil Nadu, two from Odisha and four from West Bengal came to Vijayawada to loot the valuables from the pilgrims.

They were identified as Vasantha, Jyothi, Lakshmi, Chempa, Kousalya, Priya of Chennai, Poornima Swamy, Mala Swamy, Pushpa, Lakshmi Rao, Pinki Manjudhar, Jamuna Dass, Arthi Sahu, Radha Sahu of Odisha, Selvaraj, Kokila Rao, Sivani Swamy, Sakunthala Mogiliar, Lalitha Swamy, Padma Swamy, Madhava Swamy, Yuvaraj, Mudhiriyar, Meena, Priya Rao, Saroopa Rani, Devaraj, Meenaraj, Basanti Dev, Bhavani, three minor boys and few others.

Vijayawada Joint Police Commissioner P Hari Kumar produced them before the media at Police Commissionerate. Speaking on the occasion, Hari Kumar said that 35 thieves were involved in 13 cases. They came to Vijayawada for snatching the pilgrims’ valuables during Krishna Pushkaralu, he said. As per the directions of Police Commissioner D Gautam Sawang, the Central Crime Station police focused on suspicious persons at the bathing ghats and arrested the thieves.
