Visakhapatnam: Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSI) is preparing a uniform training module for surgeon while performing cancer surgeries in the country and motivating the doctors in all States with training programmes, said ABSI national president and Padma Shri awardee Dr P Raghu Ram at GITAM Institute of Medical Science and Research during APASICON-2016 here on Thursday.

He informed that in India over 1,50,000 women are newly diagnosed with breast cancer every year and has overtaken cervical cancer to become the leading cause for death among women in the country.

He mentioned that majority of breast cancers in India present in the younger age group between 25 and 50 years particularly more than 60 per cent of breast cancers in the country are presently in the advanced stage.

The death rate from breast cancer is also very high, he said. Lack of awareness and absence of an organised national breast cancer screening programme are the main reasons. Every 10 minutes someone somewhere dies of breast cancer in India.

Due to the lack of sufficient oncology centres, the vast majority of patients with breast cancer and benign breast health issues in India are still largely managed by general surgeons, he added.

In view of this, ABSI has prepared a structured training programme under the auspices of the Association that would empower surgical trainees and general surgeons practicing in remote parts of the country.
