Visakhapatnam: Two workers suffered severe burn injuries in a blast that occurred in the Steel Melting Shop-2 of the Vizag Steel Plant here on Wednesday evening.

According to preliminary information, soon after the blast, other workers ran helter skelter while two suffered nearly 70 per cent burn injuries.

The authorities rushed the injured workers to the Visakha Steel General Hospital from where they were shifted to the Care Hospital here for better treatment.

The injured were identified as M Raja Rao, working as foreman in the SMS-2 and Suman Roy, a trainee supervisor of a China brick supplier company.

Though the exact reason for the blast is yet to be known, it is suspected that water might have been mixed in the hot metal. Despite the steel plant’s management maintaining high standards of safety measures, accidents are not new to the plant.

The worst in the history of the plant was on June 13, 2012, in which 18 persons, including some senior officials, were killed when the oxygen plant exploded due to high pressure. Of the victims, 16 died on the spot.

In another incident on June 15, 2014, two engineers were killed on the spot when they were inspecting a piece of equipment in Steel Melting Shop-2.

An officer of assistant general manager rank Arvind Malaviya was mutilated when he fell into the rotating drum of the Sinter Plant on February 11, 2015.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of Steel recognised union, Visakha Steel Employees’ Congress (INTUC), Rajasekhar Mantri told The Hans India that there was no co-ordination between the production and safety departments.

He demanded the management initiate action against the errant officials in this regard. Alleging that the blast was caused by the presence of water in the converter, he demanded the management post experienced and qualified persons in the safety department to avert such incidents.

On the condition of the two injured, the union leader said it was stated to be critical and sought high quality medical care to the injured workers.
