Visakhapatnam: The cyclonic storm Kyant is most likely to weaken into a deep depression in the sea itself and chances of it making a landfall is slim, said Indian Meteorological Department officiating director Dr Nagaratna on Wednesday.

The cyclonic storm, with a windspeed of 70 to 80 km per hour, lay over the west-central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday about 420 km east -southeast of Gopalpur, 480 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam, and 680 km east-northeast of Machilipatnam. It was predicted to move west-southwest towards west-central Bay of Bengal in the coming three days, IMD official said.

  • Cyclonic storm most likely to weaken into deep depression
  • In case of landfall, it may hit between Prakasam and Nellore districts

“The cyclone would most likely weaken over the sea into a deep depression by Friday midnight. It may or may not make a landfall, there is only a 10 percent chance that it would hit the coast, making a landfall,” said Dr Nagaratna.

However, IMD sources also maintained that since the speed and direction of the storm kept changing dynamically, there were technical difficulties to assess the accurate directions where it is headed. In case if it makes a landfall, it would hit between Prakasam and Nellore districts, they predicted.

Meanwhile, Dr Nagaratna maintained that since the cyclonic system was moving over the sea, the sea conditions would be rough on south Odisha coast on Thursday, and similar conditions would prevail along the coast of AP from Thursday to Sunday.

Some parts of south Coastal AP will receive light to moderate rainfall, with heavy rainfall at isolated places during the same period. North coastal Tamil Nadu will receive rainfalls from Friday to Monday, she said, adding, fishermen are strictly advised not to venture into the sea during this time.
