Chittoor: The proposal to develop Chittoor city into a model one on par with Tirupati took a backseat due to lack of funds.
In order to include Chittoor in Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) list, the State government constituted a city beautification committee with Chittoor MLA D A Satyaprabha as its chairman. One of the recommendations of the committee was to close the 70-year-old municipal bus stand and construct a commercial complex in its premises with an outlay of Rs 5 crore.
But, it is only on papers. The Chittoor Municipal Corporation (CMC) had demolished a 70-year-old Indian Red Cross building three months ago to make a way for constructing a statue island.
The purpose of the island was to shift all the statues of national leaders in the city to a single location.
But, the construction of island is yet to be taken up.
Kattamanchi tank in the city was dried up by diverting water to Handri-Neeva River with a purpose of converting it into a tourist spot.
Minister for Environment and Forests Bojjala Gopalakrishna Reddy had laid foundation stone for the beautification of the tank on November 4, 2015.
Rs 3 crore was allocated for the construction of cultural hall, setting up a boating club and laying a walking track. But, none of the works were grounded till now.
The groundwater levels in surrounding localities of the tank have drastically fell as it was dried up.
Residents of Kattamanchi, Kongareddipalli and other colonies are facing water shortage with drying up of bore wells.
The Chittoor MLA assured residents that water would be drawn from NTR Jalasayam for filling up the tank.
The ground reality is that the CMC has no funds to complete all the works.
Even, civic body had stopped supplying drinking water to various colonies through hired tankers for the last 11 months due to paucity of funds.
Without making efforts to secure enough funds, the city beautification committee had taken decisions and left the works in a mid-way.
Speaking to The Hans India, in-charge Mayor P Subramanyam admitted that civic body was unable to take up works because of adequate funds.
He expressed optimism of government releasing a special grant for completion of pending works.
