Guntur: CPI state secretary K Ramakrishna on Monday visited chilli farmers relay fast camp at the collectorate here and demanded that the government should purchase chilli stocks at Rs 10,000 per quintal in the backdrop of fall in chilli prices.

He expressed concern over chilli prices falling to Rs 4,500 per quintal and causing losses to the farmers.

He demanded that the government should set up Chilli Board in Guntur district and ensure a better price to chilli farmers. He demanded that the government pay a compensation of Rs 2,000 per quintal to the farmers who sold their chilli stocks and extend a helping hand to them.

He flayed the government for its failure to prevent farmers’ suicides. He said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu discussed the chilli farmers’ problems in the state Cabinet and later, he did take not any steps to purchase chilies through Markfed. He said the banks were not sanctioning loans to the chilli farmers to solve their problems.

He urged the government to set up price stabilisation fund immediately.

CPI state assistant secretary Muppalla Nageswara Rao pointed out that cold storage units were filled with chilli stocks.Due to increase in of stocks, chilli prices fell to Rs 4,500 per quintal, as a result the farmers suffered heavy losses.

He urged the government to set up chilli purchasing centres at Nandigama and Tiruvuru from the next season for the convenience of the farmers.

CPI district secretary Jangala Ajay Kumar and Chilli Farmers Association state general secretary M Ramesh Babu were among those present.
