  RINL, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant,  crossed yet another milestone on Monday with the completion of modernisation of Convertor-B,  18 days ahead of original schedule. With this, the total modernization of  the SMS-1 shop consisting of 3 convertors has been completed successfully at a cost of around Rs 400 crore.

Visakhapatnam: RINL, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, crossed yet another milestone on Monday with the completion of modernisation of Convertor-B, 18 days ahead of original schedule. With this, the total modernization of the SMS-1 shop consisting of 3 convertors has been completed successfully at a cost of around Rs 400 crore.

CMD of RINL P Madhusudan, commenced the commissioning process of Convertor-B amidst presence of directors, union leaders and a large number of employees. He exhorted the employees to work with commitment and dedication to reap the benefits of modernisation. He commended the SMS-1 collective and the agencies involved in the successful completion of the modernisation programme.

PC Mohapatra, Director (Projects), DN Rao, Director (Operations), P Raychaudhury, Director (Commercial) and other senior officials were present on the occasion. The SMS-1 has been modernised after successful operation of around 25 years.

The significance of the modernisation is that the revamping activities (Convertor after Convertor) were carried out in an operating shop with simultaneous production from the other two convertors with total safety precautions. With the completion of modernisation, the shop capacity has been enhanced to 3.5 mtpa from the original 3.0 mtpa capacity.
