Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday said the State government would construct 22 lakh toilets to make Andhra Pradesh Open Defecation Free (ODF) State by the end of March 2018.
Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday said the State government would construct 22 lakh toilets to make Andhra Pradesh Open Defecation Free (ODF) State by the end of March 2018.
Chandrababu Naidu was the chief guest at the Swachhata Hi Seva programme organised by the Krishna district administration at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation stadium here on Monday to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Union government is implementing Swachhata Hi Seva programme all over the country for the last two weeks in connection with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the Central government had decided to make India free from open defecation by 2019 and the State government is working with the same objective to meet the target by the end of March 2018.
He said so far three districts in the State have been declared as ODF districts and efforts were on to make AP free from open defecation within six months. He said the government had set a target of constructing 48.2 lakh toilets in the State.
Giving details of the ODF, he said 8,381 villages in the State have been declared as ODF villages due to the collective efforts of sarpanches, government staff and the local villagers.
He said a toilet is the symbol of self-respect for every woman and the people should avoid open defecation at any cost. He said Telugu people are very determined in achieving their goals and asserted that the government’s mission of constructing 22 lakh toilets in six months would be completed at any cost.
Referring to solid waste management in the villages, he said hundreds of villages constructed vermi-compost plants and were using the garbage for producing organic manure.
He said the production of organic manure will generate revenue to the villages. He along with other Ministers, officials and students paid rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Chandrababu Naidu said the State government is spending funds for construction of CC roads, laying UGD network and other development works.
Panchayat Raj and IT Minister Nara Lokesh explained on the development works taken up by Panchayat Raj department in rural areas.
He complimented the sarpanches for playing vital role in setting up vermi-compost units in the villages to produce organic manure.
Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas (Nani) said Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu was working with the mission of developing the State and listed out the welfare schemes being implemented by the State government.
Water Resources Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao, Minister for Sports and youth affairs Kollu Ravindra, Minister for Labour and Employment Pithani Satyanarayana, Krishna District Collector B Lakshmikantham, Joint Collector Gandham Chandrudu and others attended the event.
