Vizianagaram: Illegal traders from Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mangalore and from Delhi are reportedly procuring ganja, which is being grown extensively in Andhra-Odisha border, at a lesser price and selling it in their respective states at a higher price.
Recently, Gantyada police busted a nine-member gang and three others fled the spot. Police found that majority of them are from Odisha and some others are from Delhi, Haryana and some other states. Y Sharma of Rajasthan, Raghava of Haryana came to Vizag from Delhi by flight and consulted N Prasad and K Dinesh of Odisha and paid Rs 5.5 lakhs and purchased 792 kg of ganja and tried to transport it to Odisha through van.
The gang has taken the help of some others from Odisha and made some payment. They tried to transport the contraband by a van, a car and a jeep.
On a tip-off, Sub-Inspector of Gantyada P Narayana Rao caught the gang and seized ganja which was put underneath coconuts. Police arrested the nine members and are searching for the other three who fled the spot.
