Paddy cultivation for rabi season in Krishna Delta
Vijayawada: Farmers pinned hopes on the revival of rabi cultivation in Krishna delta in the limits of Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari and Prakasam districts. Paddy cultivation is important crop in the rabi season which starts from end of November. Nearly five lakh acres are cultivated with paddy crop in rabi season.
But the crop holiday had been announced by the State government continuously for the past five years in the last decade. The crop holiday was also imposed for the remaining five years unofficially as water was not available for irrigation purposes. Even the government had completed Pattiseema project two crop seasons ago; but it could not revive rabi in the delta so far.
Now the Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar reservoirs are having water storage to capacity. Delta farmers hope that they can get water for irrigation for the forthcoming rabi season. The Krishna delta farming community and Rytanga Samakya also request the government to make plans to revive the irrigation plans by taking steps for rabi. So far, the delta did not receive single TMC feet of water from upstream projects in the current season so far.
According to officials, water storages are full in the reservoirs Almatti, Naryanapur, Jurala and Srisailm; while water storage capacity is 50 TMC feet low against to its 312 feet TMC water storage capacity at Nagarjuna Sagar. Now the situation seems that the 262 TMC feet available water storage at Sagar is big encouragement to delta farmers when already 212 TMC feet water available at Srisailam which is almost full to its storage capacity of 215 TMC feet.
Besides, 16 TMC feet water is stored at Pulichintala project. In this backdrop, the reviving of paddy cultivation in rabi would be possible, said Krishna Delta Rytanga Samakya convener Kolanukonda Sivaji.
He also said that the delta has right to get water share from Nagarjuna Sagar. But the government did not release single TMC feet of water from Sagar by showing the Pattiseema project, he lamented. He asked the government to revive the paddy in rabi which produces Rs 5000 crore worth produce from delta.
On the other hand, irrigation official D Madhusuhdana Rao said that delta has been cultivating paddy by showing verymuch interest compared to khariff due to more yielding. He opined that rabi should be revived when the Pattiseema support is also there along with impressive water storages.
