Nellore: Deputy Speaker Mandali Buddha Prasad said they would start de-addiction centre at Pinakini Gandhi Ashram located in Indukurpet mandal as part of efforts to ban on liquor.
Participating in a programme Vandhe Gandheyam organised by the Indian Red Cross Society on Sunday, he said the ashram in Nellore has great significance after Sabarmati in Gujarat which was founded by Mahatma Gandhi.
The Deputy Speaker said the ashram was started by Mahatma in 1921 and it has been fortunate for him to visit the great place. He said Telugu people showed great courage during freedom movement and Tanguturi faced the British ignoring their arms.
He also said even former President of USA Barack Obama had announced that he was staunch follower of Gandhiji whose spirit bagged him success. He categorically announced that they would start campaign on his theories and great philosophies from this Ashram.
Collector R Mutyala Raju said one must view the ashram as an important historical place and the State government had taken measures to improve it as a tourist spot allocating huge funds.
He said they were planning to organise student trips to the ashram across the district for a practical knowledge on the place. Satyam (Truth) and Ahimsa (non-violence) are his two paramount philosophies that attracted many across the globe, he added.
Noted Ghazal composer Srinivas said he had composed Ghazals on the ashram and demonstrated at many places earlier as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. He also said they had previously organised a rally up to the ashram with 2,000 people and Rs 10 lakh was also donated through a service organisation. He also said they would provide books to ashram after the required arrangements are made.
He also said they would be inviting Prime Minister, Vice President and the Chief Minister for a programme to be held on January 30. Ghazal Srinivas also said they were making a short-film on the ashram for more understanding to public.
Revenue Divisional Officer D Haritha, Tahsildar Madhusudan, Ashram convener Krishna Reddy and IRCS member Dr AV Subrahmanyam were present.
