Nellore: Internal rivalry among BJP leaders in the district came to the fore in a meeting held here on Wednesday. They had resorted to verbal duel and fist fights criticising the other groups in the presence of huge number of party workers.

Followers of BJP state general secretary S Suresh Reddy organised a rally in the city here on Wednesday. As part of the procession, they shouted slogans against the district party leaders and demanded for social justice in the party. Further, the BJP leaders under the leadership of present district president P Surender Reddy organised ‘Dalit Chaitanya Sadassu’ in the town hall.

Followers of Suresh Reddy, who took out a rally from Gandhi Statue up to the town hall, have reached the venue and disrupted the meeting. Scuffle broke out between the followers of Suresh Reddy and Surender Reddy at the town hall.

Followers of Suresh Reddy damaged flexis at the meeting and argued with leaders of other group and expressed their anger for not giving importance to Dalits in the party. “There are two groups in the party.

Though we are giving equal importance to every community in the party committees but some of the leaders have been trying to create disturbances. Some leaders are degrading reputation of the party,” said Karnati Anjaneya Reddy, BJP state spokesperson, responding over the issue. It may be recalled that the BJP state leaders had not conducted any Mahasabha to elect a new president to the district for the last two years.

Meanwhile, the party present president Surender Reddy has been continuing in the post for the last two years. The BJP has been continuing adhoc committees across the district not conducting even booth level elections till now, said party sources.

They said the meeting which was organised on Wednesday had no such significance for rivalries and it demonstrated group politics that have been haunting the district party for some time.

In fact, Surender Reddy is having blessings of party national leader M Venkaiah Naidu for getting the position and Suresh Reddy had joined the team of MLC Somu Veerraju, who was identified as anti-Venkaiah group in state politics.

Sources said that there was no direct monitoring on the district party activities after Venkaiah Naidu was elected as Vice President of India and the gap between Suresh Reddy and Surender Reddy has widened. The internal dissidence exposed recently in connection with selection of city party president. There was criticism that Surender Reddy has been giving priority only for one section of people.
