District In-Charge Collector A.Md.Imtiaz said 18,885 HIV positive cases registered in various medical facilities last year and said the spread of deadly virus can be prevented with proper knowledge and preventive measures on it.
Nellore: District In-Charge Collector A.Md.Imtiaz said 18,885 HIV positive cases registered in various medical facilities last year and said the spread of deadly virus can be prevented with proper knowledge and preventive measures on it.
He addressed at a programme organized at Town Hall here on Friday he said the virus spreads through unsafe sexual practices, contaminated blood, from infected mother to child, and contaminated syringes. Imtiaz also said the first case reported in Chennai in 1986 and the first case at Hyderabad in 1987.
He appealed to the non-government organizations and voluntary agencies to spread message on deadly impact of the virus and the repercussions. He asked the officials to demonstrate Salman Khan’s movie which released in 2004 touched on the subject of HIV/AIDS for more understanding among people.
He said the movie gained low attendance from the viewers but medical professionals applauded the movie for its social message. He said every medical student has to watch it. Joint Collector-2 VV Subba Reddy said World Aids Day is being observed since 1988 on every Dec 1 and asked the people to show empathy towards the affected.
He said they would extend support to the victims of the deadly virus giving the first priority. Nodal Officer for Leprosy and AIDS Dr Rama Devi said ART drugs are available to reduce infection rate among the patients. She said they would provide these medicines to the infected irrespective of CD4 count. 18,885 have been registered in various hospitals in the district and were getting the drugs at free of cost.

Joint Collector-2 formally launched a rally from Gandhi statue centre. He handed over mementoes to the officials, staff members and representatives of NGOs during the programme. Officials from medical and health department, NGOs and others were present.
