Electricity contract employees demand regularisation
Thousands of electricity contract employees, who have been agitating for regularisation of their services for the last two decades, took out a massive rally and attended a meeting organised by the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Contract Employees United Forum at Gymkhana grounds here on Tuesday.
Vijayawada: Thousands of electricity contract employees, who have been agitating for regularisation of their services for the last two decades, took out a massive rally and attended a meeting organised by the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Contract Employees United Forum at Gymkhana grounds here on Tuesday.
Thousands of contract employees working in APTransco, APGenco and distribution companies in the State held a massive demonstration holding placards and banners highlighting their demands. Flexis were also displayed. The United Forum of Electricity Employees consists of 11 unions working in the State.
The Forum has recently given a call for ‘Chalo Vijayawada’ on December 5 to exert pressure on the State government to fulfill the pre-poll promise made by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in the TDP manifesto. In response to the call, more than 10,000 contract employees from all 13 districts of the State participated in the procession and meeting.
United Forum Chairman P Kasi Madhubabu, General Secretary M Bala Kasi and six other representatives spoke on the occasion. The leaders said 22,500 contract employees working in the State would go for indefinite strike from January 27 if the State government does not concede their demands. They pointed out that the TDP in its election manifesto had assured regularisation of the contract employees.
They said the Supreme Court has given a clear verdict on equal pay for equal work. They lamented that the contract workers working in Transco, Genco and discoms had been living in deplorable conditions with very low income. The leaders said the Telangana government had regularised 25,000 contract employees while the AP government was postponing the issue.
The United Forum of Electricity Employees demanded that the government should pay compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family members of the contract employees in case of death on duty and provide a permanent job for a family member. CITU State secretary M A Gafoor, YSRCP Krishna district president Kolusu Parthasarathy and CPM city secretary Donepudi Sankar also spoke on the occasion. The Opposition leaders expressed solidarity with the contract employees.
