Elderly call off stir with Collector’s assurance on pension payment
With an assurance of the District Collector, elderly persons, who were staging protest in front of civic body office in Proddatur demanding release of old-age pensions for eligible beneficiaries from Monday onwards under the leadership of YSRCP MLA Rachamallu Sivaprasada Reddy, have called off their stir on Wednesday.
Kadapa: With an assurance of the District Collector, elderly persons, who were staging protest in front of civic body office in Proddatur demanding release of old-age pensions for eligible beneficiaries from Monday onwards under the leadership of YSRCP MLA Rachamallu Sivaprasada Reddy, have called off their stir on Wednesday.
District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Project Director (PD) Ramachandra Reddy has visited the protest camp on Wednesday and assured the MLA that old-age pensions would be released for beneficiaries from December 9th onwards. The elderly persons were forced to stage protest as municipality officials have failed to implement the orders of the Collector.
The Collector had issued orders sanctioning old-age pensions to beneficiaries of 12 divisions in the town. The civic body officials did not release pensions citing the list was forwarded to the Collector by a computer operator working in municipal office without informing the Proddatur Municipal Chairman. The municipal officials did not pay pensions to beneficiaries stating that the list should be reverified and enquiry should be taken up to crosscheck the age of people, who were in the list.
But, some victims met District Collector T Baburao Naidu and urged him to direct the municipal officials to release pension amount immediately. But, the civic officials did not follow the directions of the Collector instead placed computer operator P Manohar under suspension on the charges of directly sending the list to the Collector without informing the municipal chairman.
The issue precipitated after Kadapa MP YS Avinash Reddy spoke to the District SP seeking an appointment for four beneficiaries to meet Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on December 8, who will be visiting Proddatur town, to participate in centenary celebrations of a government school.
But, the SP informed the MP that he can confirm appointment after speaking to higher officials. Meanwhile, the Collector sent DRDA PD to protest camp. The PD informed the MLA that the Collector has assured to release old-age pensions from December 9th onwards.
