Recycling of garbage project yet to take off

Srikakulam: The garbage recycling project has been lying in limbo for the past 10 years and yet to take off in Srikakulam city Initially, the project was proposed to collect garbage at the door step of the people across the city and during the second stage, it has to be separated as dry and wet garbage. In the third stage, plan to produce power and organic manure from wet garbage.
For manufacturing of organic manure, vermi compost units, sheds, internal roads and water are arranged at dumping yard at Patrunivalasa village near Srikakulam city by spending Rs 15 lakh. To collect garbage from door to door, tricycles, plastic tubs, buckets and other material were purchased by the municipality.
Another Rs 30 lakh was spent to produce power through the gas generated from wet garbage and a plant was constructed at Khazipet water supply station near the city. But both remained useless and not even kg manure, a unit power and recycled goods were produced yet.
Every year, on an average, Rs 8.5 crore funds are being spent for sanitation management in the city and by using these recycled methods, can earn more revenue by selling power, manure and recycled goods.
“Recycling process is environment- friendly and useful to prevent pollution generated from garbage kept in open area,” municipal environment wing engineer, J Shankara Rao explained to The Hans India.
“We will use all facilities for better garbage management in the city and proposals are also being prepared for the revival of bio-gas plants, organic manure units and vermi compost sheds,” municipal commissioner R Sreeramulu Naidu told The Hans India.
