Anantapur: The YSRCP sponsored bandh was by and large total and peaceful in the district on Tuesday. The bandh was observed seeking Special Category Status (SCS) to the state. Opposition party leaders including CPI district president Jagadish and city president Jaffer along with scores of Left party workers went around the city and asked the shop owners to shut down their units.
CPM leader Ram Bhupal and party workers actively participated in the agitation. Bandh was also total in the towns of Gooty, Guntakal, Tadipatri, Kalyandurg, Hindupur and in other parts of the district.
As a precautionary measure, police made house arrest of some of the YSRCP leaders at various places. The stir received good response from various sections of the people. The bandh was supported by leaders and activists of Congress and the Left parties.
YSRCP district president Shankara Narayana, former Mayor Raga Parasuram and Uravakonda MLA Visweswara Reddy were put under house arrest from Monday night. Private and government educational institutions down their shutters.
Banks and shops and establishments in the city and in other towns were closed for the day right from early morning on Tuesday. Leaders and activists of YSRCP, Congress and Left parties were seen going around the city asking people to keep away from all business activities for the day.
RTC authorities fearing damage to buses, confined the buses to respective depots. The opposition party workers took out rallies at different places raising slogans against the Central and state governments.
Senior YSRCP Leaders and former MP Anantha Venkatarama Reddy and Uravakonda MLA flayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. They accused both the leaders of pursuing politics of opportunism. The leaders thanked the people of the district for making the bandh successful.
