Tirupati: Two women hostels of the Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) are facing severe water shortage for the last one month.

Particularly, the girl students residing in hostels near post office and distance education building are the worst hit.

The inmates of these hostels are pursuing dual engineering degree and other PG courses. Girl students alleged varsity authorities were not at all concerned to resolve the water shortage issue.

As a temporary measure, officials have been storing small quantity of water in few drums every day. The water scarcity was attributed to accommodating more students in hostels than the room capacity.

At present, there are 3,000 girl students are residing in both hostels when the actual capacity is 2,000 only. Water consumption has increased due to more number of residents in hostels.

At present, water is being supplied one hour each in the morning and evening, that too, in tankers. But, the water supplied is not enough to meet the needs of hostels’ inmates.

For the last 15 days, the women hostel inmates were not having enough water to wash clothes, bathe and defecate.

Speaking to The Hans India, a MSc second year student G Padma has expressed anguish over hostel authorities for not resolving the acute water shortage despite bringing to their notice on several occasions.

SFI district secretary B Madhav Krishna has warned to launch a protest if the SVU officials failed to address the water shortage issue on priority basis.
