MLAs seek fee structure review in private medical colleges

Amaravati: Expressing serious concern over the fee structure in private medical colleges,BJP floor leader P Vishnukumar Raju said colleges were virtually looting the parents by collecting huge amounts of fee without any proper system.

Participating in the debate in the Assembly here on Wednesday, he appealed to the government to review the fee collection system comparing with neighboring states. He also alleged that the private medical colleges were selling the seats under NRI quota.

The BJP MLA said the private colleges were collecting huge fees ranging from Rs 30-40 lakh annually and added the students should pay Rs 2 crore for completion of medicine.

He wondered as to how the doctors would serve people after completion of their education. The neighboring states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana were collecting less fee compared to Andhra Pradesh, he pointed out.

Stating the students must pay Rs 12.73 lakh as deposit for attending the counseling, he said they should deposit the same amount again if they want to get admission in Telangana.

He asked the government as to how the poorer sections and middle-class people would pay such huge amounts. TDP MLA D Narendrakumar asked the government to fix uniform fee structure for maintaining transparency in the medical counselling and admissions in private medical colleges.

Finance Minister YanamalaRamakrishunudu said the admission of fee of ‘A’ category seats under the government was very low compared to other states. He said the government allowed the fees structure as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

Yanamalasaid the government would take the suggestions of MLA into consideration and examine them for implementation. At the end of the business on Wednesday, Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao adjourned the House sine die.
