Parvathipuram (Vizianagaram): Pregnant women’s hostel established by ITDA officials at Saluru in the district has crossed 100 safe deliveries today. The hostel was established as pilot project in September 2018 to prevent deliveries on road in tribal areas. So far, 128 tribal pregnant women from 89 hilltop villages made use of the facility. With this intervention, the IMR and MMR reduced in tribal area.

The homely ambience, motherly care, nutritious food, regular medical check-up and congenial environment of hostel is spreading from mouth to mouth in the tribal area. Hence more people are showing interest to join the hostel. However, only high-risk mothers and remote villagers are only admitted owing to space limitation, said Deputy DMHO Dr M Ravikumar.

“The establishment of hostel has reduced the IMR and MMR considerably in the tribal areas. We are exploring the options to institutionalise the facility,” said Dr G Lakshmisha, PO ITDA, Parvathipuram. The 100th mother of hostel Vemula Chandramma from Kothuru village in Saluru mandal has expressed her happiness about the facilities and care given to her in the hostel. “It is really a wonderful programme implemented by the government,” she said.
