Fiat Chrysler Automobiles confirmed that it is recalling 5.7 lakh utility vehicles in two separate global campaigns. It is speculated that the concerns pose a fire risk for customers who own the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, Jeep Compass and Patriot vehicles.
The first campaign involves 4.7 lakh vehicles that includes 2011-2012 made Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs. The recall is being carried out to fix a problem with the vanity mirror wiring that can overheat and become a fire hazard.
An estimated 3.5 lakh vehicles are affected in the US, 26,500 in Canada, 13,000 in Mexico and 84,300 around the world. FCA will make sure that the wiring in the headliners of the recalled vehicles will be secured with a new adhesive, and measures will be taken to keep the wiring from contacting potentially abrasive surfaces.
The second campaign will include a recall of 93,300 2015 made Jeep Compass and Patriot compact utility vehicles. A problem with a clamp that secures a hose, if out of position, could result in a rapid loss of power steering fluid which could leak onto a hot surface and pose a potential fire hazard.
It would also make it more difficult to steer. 60,100 vehicles have been identified in the US, 5,800 in Canada, 3,400 in Mexico and 24,000 around the world. FCA is not aware of any related injuries or accidents as of now.
While none of the recalled models are sold in India, the FCA is gearing up for the C SUV and expansion plans at the Ranjangaon plant to accommodate the production plan for this SUV has already been announced.
